If someone told you to “take driving school,” you may quickly encounter two different terms: Driver Improvement and RADEP. Both relate to traffic-safety education, but they should not automatically be treated as two names for the same program.
The right question is not “Which course is better?” The right question is “Which course was actually requested or recommended for my situation?”
The programs overlap in the broad goal of safer driving, but their emphasis and use are different.
Virginia Driver Improvement is an eight-hour program focused on defensive-driving techniques and safer driving practices.
Reckless/aggressive driver education focuses more specifically on unsafe choices, behavior, emotions, attitudes, and risk-taking.
Driver Improvement emphasizes safer driving techniques and general crash prevention.
RADEP can focus more deeply on recognizing risk-taking behavior and unsafe choices.
Driver Improvement reinforces general traffic-safety knowledge and practices.
RADEP can address anger, impatience, aggression, and emotional driving reactions.
Driver Improvement addresses techniques intended to help avoid and prevent crashes.
RADEP can explore why unsafe decisions occur even when a driver knows the rule.
Driver Improvement reinforces safer operating habits and traffic awareness.
RADEP can focus on consequences, accountability, and changing unsafe patterns.
The two programs can be related without being identical.
A commonly used complete structure combines the broader Driver Improvement component with additional reckless/aggressive education.
If an acceptable Driver Improvement component has already been completed, only the additional reckless/aggressive education may remain in an appropriate situation.
Not without asking. If the attorney specifically recommended Driver Improvement, verify before substituting another program.

DMV says a driver may be awarded up to five safe-driving points after successful Driver Improvement completion, subject to applicable rules. If a court requires the clinic, the court determines whether points are awarded.
Commercial Driver Improvement is a separate DMV program when a CDL holder or driver operating a commercial motor vehicle is required to complete commercial driver improvement.
A standard non-commercial Driver Improvement Clinic or ordinary RADEP pathway should not be assumed to satisfy a CDL-specific clinic requirement.
